One of the features of the area of south-west France where we spend the summers is the dovecotes.
Built free-standing or at the end of a house or barn, but usually on a high ground and visible from distance, the dovecotes were a status symbol during the Middle Ages and early modern times .
Before the French Revolution of the 1789 to have a dovecote was one of the privileges of the nobility and the landlords, dovecote’s number of nests being proportional with the size of the land owned: 1 nest for 1 hectare of owned land.
My latest project is to try a series of these dovecotes in mosaic. I’ve got a few elliptical bases and I think they will me a good shape and size for this project.
